This course is designed to recertify by written examination, those indivuals who currently are certified at Bituminous Plant Level 2. Each individual must successfully complete the current Bituminous Plant 2 examination. NOTE: If you no longer need or do not pass the Level 2 Bituminous Plant Recertification , you must take the Level 1 Recertification class to retain that certification.
Prerequisites: Bituminous Plant 2
With sessions in classroom and lab, this course discusses test procedures and calculations for hot mix asphalt (HMA). Subjects covered are: field sampling of HMA; maximum specific gravity (Rice) test; gyratory specimens and bulk specific gravity; air voids; extraction-gradation of HMA; adjusted asphalt film thickness (AFT); fine aggregate angularity (FAA); Lottman or tensile strength ratio (TSR); percent of maximum gravity of pavement cores; spot check.
NOTE: Upon successful completion of the written examination, the student must schedule a hands-on performance evaluation at a MnDOT District Lab within 1 year of passing the exam. After this time, candidates must re-take the Bituminous Plant 1 class and reschedule the performance evaluation, again within 1 year of the new written examination.

It covers Bituminous Mix Design requirements and working ranges specified by MnDOT specifications. It also covers subjects such as blending aggregates and recycled mixture design. There will be a day of lab work as well as four days in the classroom. This course prepares the student for doing MnDOT Trial Mix Design submittals.
NOTE: Upon successful completion of the course and written examination, the student must develop a bituminous mix design (2360) and submit it with all required documentation and related mixture materials to a MnDOT District Lab. After this time, candidates must re-take the Bituminous Plant 2 class, and submit a bituminous mix design (2360) to a MnDOT District Lab, again within 1 year of the new written examination. The MnDOT District Lab must verify and issue an approved "Mixed Design Report" for your mix design and submit an approval voucher to the Technical Certification Program
